April 2025 Southern Pine lumber exports (treated and untreated) were up 22.7% over the same month in 2024 at 57.4 MMBF and up 34.8% over March 2025, according to April 2025 data from the USDA’s Foreign Agriculture Services’ Global Agricultural Trade System.
Year-to-date exports, however, are running 4% behind the same period in 2024 at 179.7 MMBF.
When looking at the report by dollar value, Southern Pine exports were up 27% to $22.6 million in April – a 12-month high – compared to the same month in 2024 and up 26% over March 2025. Mexico leads the way YTD 2025 at $20.7 million, followed by the Dominican Republic at $15.8 million, and Canada at $5 million.
Treated lumber exports, meanwhile, were up 47% compared to April 2025 at $15 million and up 53% over March 2025. The Leeward-Windward Islands lead the way through the first four months of the year at $6.8 million, followed by Jamaica at $5.5 million, and The Bahamas at $4 million.
Softwood lumber imports were down 5% in April to 1.2 MMBF over the year and down 13.7% over March 2025.
April 2025 Southern Pine Lumber Export Markets
Our international consultants weighed in with the following key takeaways on Southern Pine lumber (treated and untreated) export numbers among countries reporting more than 1 MMBF of imports through April 2025:
- Mexico remains the largest export market (by volume) of Southern Pine and treated lumber, but remains down 6% through April with 45.5 MMBF.
- The Dominican Republic, the No. 2 importer of Southern Pine, continued its slow start to 2025, down 11% with 30.1 MMBF.
- Canada, which is now the No. 4 importer of Southern Pine lumber (treated and untreated), is running 1% behind 2024 YTD 9.3 MMBF.
- India also continued its sluggish start to 2025, down 33% YTD with 8.2 MMBF.
- The Philippines posted another surge, moving to a 181% increase over 2024, with 3.1 MMBF for the first three months of 2025.
- Pakistan, meanwhile, reported an 11% year-over-year drop with 4.6 MMBF so far in 2025.
- Exports to China, now the 12th largest importer, are down 36% YTD at 3.3 MMBF.
- The following countries in the Caribbean and Central American region, outside of Mexico and the Dominican Republic mentioned above, imported more than 1 MMBF through the first quarter of 2025:
- Jamaica: the third-largest export market was down 4% through the first four months of 2025 with 16.5 MMBF.
- The Leeward-Windward Islands: down 1% YTD with 10.5 MMBF.
- The Bahamas: up 19% with 7.9 MMBF.
- Barbados: down up 79% to 6 MMBF.
- Netherland Antilles: up 63% at 5.7 MMBF.
- Belize: up 7% year-over-year with 4.1 MMBF.
- Haiti: up 145% with 3.1 MMBF.
- Trinidad and Tobago: down 9% with 2.9 MMBF.
- Cayman Islands: down 21% at 1.9 MMBF.
- Other countries of note:
- Vietnam: up 121% over the year on 2.1 MMBF.
- Colombia: down 37% with 1.7 MMBF.
- France: up 36% with 1.2 MMBF.
- Taiwan: down 55% YTD with 1.1 MMBF.
