Eight Southern Pine lumber facilities – all members of the Southern Forest Products Association (SFPA) – are recipients of the 2011 Sawmill Safety Award. This award recognizes both sawmills and treating plants for outstanding safety records.

SFPA member facilities are considered for the award based on information submitted regarding lost-time occupational injuries and illnesses. Safety performance is judged by how each plant’s safety record stacks up against facilities with comparable lumber output throughout the year. Division I includes treating plants and sawmills that treat or produce 50 million board feet or less; Division II covers facilities that produce 51 to 150 million board feet; and Division III includes facilities that produce more than 150 million board feet annually. All of the facilities being honored this year reported zero incidents during 2011:

Division I     Cox Industries Inc. – Woodstock, AL; Blackstone, VA; Eutawville, SC
Division II    Weyerhaeuser Company – Holden, LA; New Bern, NC; Millport, AL
Division III    Westervelt Lumber – Moundville, AL; Weyerhaeuser Company – McComb, MS

“SFPA is pleased to recognize these operations that maintain outstanding safety records. Providing a safe working environment remains a top priority for the Southern Pine lumber industry,” said SFPA’s Chairman of the Board Tom Rice of Conner Industries. The awards were presented during SFPA’s recent Board of Directors meeting in Atlanta.
