The Southern Forest Products Association (SFPA) has posted online its comprehensive set of updated span tables, all based on the new design values for visually graded Southern Pine dimension lumber that became effective June 1, 2013.

From the Span Tables landing page on www.SouthernPine.com, an array of 46 tables lists maximum spans for Southern Pine joists and rafters, For each application, a PDF download is available. From this page, users can also download SFPA’s updated publication Southern Pine Maximum Spans for Joists & Rafters that includes all 46 tables, design assumptions and five examples showing how to read the table values.

SFPA’s updated collection of span tables for Southern Pine headers and beams is comprised of 38 tables. Twenty of the tables provide size selections for various beam spans and loading combinations for Southern Pine dimension lumber and Southern Pine glued laminated timber, available for six applications. In addition, eighteen tables provide allowable floor loads and allowable roof loads for Southern Pine dimension lumber and Southern Pine glued laminated timber.  Users can find all 38 tables and additional information by downloading the 2013 edition of SFPA’s publication Southern Pine Headers and Beams.

“By far, these tables are the most popular pages of our website,” noted Cathy Kaake, SFPA’s vice president of technical marketing.  “We have designed these tables to be extremely user friendly, helping to assure the proper application of Southern Pine materials,” she added.
